Part 9: The Wrap-Up

Series: Kicking @$$ in Today's Business Environment

We’re at the end of this road for this series – or, as we prefer to think of it, ready to start the next adventure.

Our hope is that this has been an eye-opener and a useful foundation for those who are building and scaling businesses – wearing all the hats from executive to bottle-washer-in-chief as the moment demands.

...And Now What?

The obvious question is where you go from here. Well, that depends on where you are today and what you’ve learned through this series and other resources you’ve absorbed. We’ve talked about three primary functions that are essential to a solid and sustainable business: executive, finance and communication. Where you go next will, in part, be dictated by how you assess the state of your business and your personal skills and preferences in each silo.

It's Time to Take Stock

Take a good look. First, where are the gaps in the executive realm? Are your goals clear? Do you have a good road map for getting there? Next, do an honest evaluation of your financial foundation. Do you need to shore up understanding of the financial side of being in business? Do you have the right tools and process in place to track, evaluate and manage growth? Finally, assess what you’re communicating, both internally and to the world at large. Is your unique value proposition and your brand’s spirit and culture being broadcast to the world in a compelling way? And do you have your hands around the process of connecting with and influencing target consumers?

Obviously, a thorough assessment is way deeper than these representative questions, and you’ll want to invest the time in really thinking through what you need to take your company to the next level. Once you know, you’ll have to evaluate how your needs track to your own expertise, as well as to the resources you already have available to you. Decide what and how much you can do with yourself and your team, and whether the results will be the best they can be, or whether you would be better served with some outside expertise in specific areas. One final consideration is to ask yourself if tackling any given project or task is the best and highest use of your time. If it is, great. Have at it. But if a good look in the mirror tells you that you need some help, go get it. Give yourself and your business the fuel to grow and thrive.
